Acupuncture
Restore Balance. Relieve Pain. Revitalize Your Health.
At Professional Curative, we practice Acupuncture as it was intended: a holistic medical system designed to help your body heal itself. Originating in ancient China over 2,500 years ago, this therapy involves the insertion of ultra-fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body.
While many seek us out for pain relief, acupuncture is about much more than just “fixing” a sore back. It is about regulating the flow of Qi (vital energy) through pathways in the body known as meridians. When this flow is disrupted by stress, injury, or poor lifestyle, illness occurs. Our goal is to remove those blockages and restore your body’s natural harmony.
How Does It Work?
We bridge the gap between ancient wisdom and modern science.
- The Traditional View: We view the body as a garden. If a stream (meridian) is blocked, the plants (organs) wither. Acupuncture unblocks the stream, allowing life energy to nourish the whole system.
- The Modern Scientific View: Acupuncture stimulates the central nervous system. This triggers the release of chemicals like endorphins (nature’s painkillers) and serotonin (the “happy” hormone) into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. It also improves blood circulation and reduces inflammation.

Your First Visit: What to Expect
We know that trying a new therapy can be intimidating. Here is exactly what happens during a session at Professional Curative:
- The Diagnosis: We don’t just look at your symptoms; we look at you. We will check your pulse on both wrists and observe your tongue (a map of your internal health in TCM) to determine your unique constitution.
- The Treatment: You will lie comfortably on a massage table/bed. We will insert the needles—usually between 5 to 20 depending on your condition.
- The “Nap”: Once the needles are in, you will rest for 30 minutes. Many patients find this deeply relaxing and often fall asleep!
- Complementary Therapies: Depending on your needs, we may combine acupuncture with Moxibustion (warming herbs).
Myths vs. Facts
Acupuncture is one of the most widely used forms of complementary medicine, yet it remains shrouded in misconceptions—often because the idea of being poked with needles sounds more like a medieval trial than a medical treatment.
Here are the most common myths about acupuncture debunked by science and modern practice.
Myth 1: “Acupuncture is painful”
This is the most common deterrent for new patients. Many people imagine the thick, hollow needles used for vaccine shots or blood draws.
- The Reality: Acupuncture needles are solid, flexible, and roughly the width of a human hair. They are so thin that about 40 of them could fit inside the tip of a standard medical syringe. Most patients feel a tiny “pinch” or “mosquito bite” sensation upon insertion, followed by a dull pressure, tingling, or heavy sensation, but a sharp pain is rare. The feeling of heaviness or tingling is called called de qi, which is good! It is actually a sign that the treatment is working. Many find the experience so relaxing they fall asleep during the session.
Myth 2: “It’s just a placebo effect”
Critics often argue that acupuncture only works if you believe it will.
- The Reality: Clinical research using fMRI (brain imaging) shows that acupuncture triggers measurable changes in the brain’s pain-processing centers. Furthermore, acupuncture is highly effective on animals and infants, neither of whom have the “belief” necessary to trigger a placebo effect. It works by stimulating the nervous system to release natural painkillers like endorphins and adenosine.
Myth 3: “Acupuncture needles are unsanitary”
Some worry about the risk of infection or disease transmission.
- The Reality: In modern practice, licensed acupuncturists are required to use sterile, single-use, disposable needles. Each needle is taken from a sealed package and immediately discarded into a sharps container after use, virtually eliminating the risk of infection.
Myth 4: “You have to go forever once you start”
Some fear they will become “addicted” or that the effects will wear off immediately.
- The Reality: Acupuncture is not addictive. While chronic conditions may require a series of treatments to see lasting change, acute issues often resolve in a few sessions. The goal is to restore the body’s ability to heal itself so that you eventually don’t need treatment.
